Spirit Drums

We make these drums in honor of the Ancestors and the animals of the New World.  A combination of loving construction and "honing & toning" creates a responsive and hardy drum.  The traditional four directions handle represents the medicine of the land.

While our drums are drying, we smudge them frequently with sage, amber, sweetgrass & other sacred herbs.  This not only keeps the energy pure and beautiful, it lays down a layer of smoke that helps the drums be more resilient to weather and temperature changes (of course, all hide drums are going to have some variations).  We also talk to them and smooth the sides as they dry.  When the drums come to life, they just sound and feel wonderful!

As with all drums, the larger drums have lower vibrations.  These drums are available with a full wrap or scalloped sides.  They come with a standard beater in your choice of color.

American Bison (Buffalo)

Arguably the most important spiritual animal to the people of the North American Plains, the buffalo represents abundance and connection with the Creator.  Buffalo drums are medium to dark in color have a very low tone with some underlying harmonics.  The buffalo drum carries Grandfather energy.  It is always scalloped because of the thickness of the hide.

About the hoops:

Deodar Cedar is a variety of cedar that is found naturally in India and the Middle East but has become common world wide.  Like all cedars, it carries the energy of cleansing and protection.  Cedars have been used worldwide for everything from making temple doors to weaving clothing, The name Deodar translates in Sanskrit to “God’s Tree” and it is revered on the Indian subcontinent as a particularly divine tree and is sacred to Shiva.  Ancient sages lived in Deodar forests.  It is the national tree of Pakistan.  The hoops are made of a single piece of wood, steamed and wrapped, and are strong and light-weight.

Maple is common in both Europe and North America. It is considered a tree of balance, wisdom and prosperity.  The life cycle of the Maple exemplifies the turning of the seasons.  Maple is used to make many things including musical instruments, and is considered a tonewood, which is a wood that carries sound waves well.  It is a hard wood with a bright sound.  These hoops are machine made 10-ply and are heavier but extremely durable.
